Yamakaathaghi Movie Review
Yamakaathaghi is a mystery drama, written and directed by Peppin George Jayaseelan, featuring Narendra Prasad, Roopa, Geetha Kailasam and many other well known faces in the star-cast.
The story is set in the backdrops of a village in Tanjore, where the entire villagers are preparing for a grand temple festival. During this juncture, a shocking incident occurs with the demise of Village Head’s daughter Leela (Roopa), due to breathing problem. While everyone laments over the demise during the funeral rites, and pay their final respects, things turn out to be a topsy-turvy situation as they aren’t able to move the mortal remains of the girl.
So is it the deceased girl’s ghost or any other reason? This forms the crux of this story.
Actress Roopa as Leela has breathed her best for this role. Although her character initially endorses liveliness, it gradually gets into serious zone during latter parts of the film. In particular, her facial description as a deceased person is very well pictured. Ramu Rajappan as the girl’s father and Geetha Kailasam as her mother have delivered what is required for their respective roles. The other actors Narendra Prasad, Pradeep Durairaj and other actors are flawless and natural with their performances.
What’s impressive on the technical side is the spellbinding visuals by cinematographer Sujith Saarang. Specifically, the way he captures the visuals of interiors of ambience surrounding the mortal remains of the girl in night time is brilliant. Jecin George’s musical score and Sync Cinemas’ Sound Mixing is very well done.
The film has got a mystery laced with social issues being sprinkled. Although the trailer might give an impression of a supernatural thriller, the feature film doesn’t totally revolve around it. It keeps the audience guessing till the end on what’s the actual problem.
The way, the mystery is retained throughout the film. However, the way, all the knots are untied, could have been done better.
Director Peppin George Jayaseelan has crafted a tale that looks fresh and unique in many places. The film has very few minuses, which doesn’t hamper the film’s progression, and you can give a try, if you’re looking out for something different.
