Vikram Movie Review
The Pan-Indian war has been the reigning topic of our National movie industry, where South Indian flicks have been creating tremendous records. But still! There’s been an intense craving that Tamil movies are deprived of achieving their stature with few masterpieces from the Kannada and Telugu industry managing to pull it off efficiently in terms of content and box office collections. While most of the biggies from the Tamil movie industry have failed to make a tremendous mark at the National level, Kamal Haasan’s Vikram became the only source of solace and assurance for the entire K-Town. Of course, with a bunch of promising actors from the South Industry including Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil, Suriya, and a few more prominent actors, being a part of this star cast, the expectations sky-rocketed to a greater extent. Besides, the previous hits of filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj turned out to be yet another emblazonment to the project. So let us check out how well Vikram has scored brownie points.
The story revolves around a series of murders happening in the city, and the victims are an honest police officer Prapanchan (Kalidas Jayaram), and his adopted father Karnan (Kamal Haasan), who are killed one after the other. The police department brings an undercover agent Amar (Fahadh Faasil) to investigate, and this is where the ultimate game begins that leads to unexpected paths and revelations.
The primary factor that every audience would earnestly note and appreciate about ‘Vikram’ is the effort that has gone into writing it. As the title ‘Vikram’ suggests, the movie is a character-driven plot, and more emphasis has been laid upon the protagonist’s character. At the same time, the movie rubbishes the misconceptions that the actors like Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil, and Suriya have been included for name sake, merely as a crowd-puller factor. Kudos to director Rathna Kumar and Lokesh Kanagaraj, they have exerted their inmost heart and soul for every single character. Their writing approach in amalgamating the premise of their previous movie Kaithi with Vikram is outstanding. We don’t want to reveal it as this would become a spoiler.
The characterizations being very well written is a major attraction. In fact, the duo had followed the same pattern in their previous outing ‘Master’ as well, where the antagonist’s character too had an in-depth description from beginning, process, and end. In the same manner, we get to see that all the characters in this movie have great intensity. The trailer would have given an impression that it’s an out-and-out action thriller, but then, the emotional contents to dominate a lot, which keeps justifying the high-octane action and violence, or else, this would have been a mere namesake action drama.
When it comes to performance, there needs no analysis about Kamal Haasan’s spell as he just leaves you awe-stricken in many moments… It’s obvious that Lokesh Kanagaraj has made this movie a fanboy moment for Kamal Haasan, and has justified it with every frame, especially in the action blocks. But then, Kamal Haasan sweeps us off the feet with his incredible emotional approach. Say, for instance, the scene where he is emotionally broken within and sets out to protect his grandson is just remarkable. The next one to obviously steal our attention is Vijay Sethupathi. He has completely shifted his paradigm of performance to a different domain. It is evident that he has made this as a conscious decision. From his body language to facial expressions, everything looks simply brilliant. But we do feel that they become repetitive after a certain extent.
Fahadh Faasil takes a cakewalk with this role. In fact, this role means nothing to him, and he casually exhibits his prowess. Not to miss the screen presence of Narain, who has done perfect justice to his characterization… He is the direct link between Kaithi and Vikram as his character is a spin-off from the previous one. Suriya’s special appearance has been one of the most expected moments and we leave it to you to judge how the experience is.
Three major scenes that leave theaters to erupt in absolute enthrallment
- The meeting of all characters by intermission
- The surprise character Teena
- Climax with an open ending that merges Kaithi with Vikram.
Anirudh’s BGM turns out to be the biggest asset in keeping the High-octane action blocks and emotional scenes at the feel. The cinematography by Girish Gangadharan is the greatest emblazonment. He has delivered an impeccable visual treat with his cinematography.
Revealing more than this would actually turn out to be a spoiler. Lokesh Kanagaraj has very well executed his universe of heroes, and other characters through this ‘Vikram’, and it’s indeed a first-of-its-kind experience for the entire Indian audience.
Overall, Vikram is an incredible treat for movie buffs, especially diehard fans of action-thriller movies. Just watch in the theaters for a good experience.
