A sort of ambiguity prevails throughout the film ‘Soorarai Pottru’. The reason – makers promoting it as a biopic based on the autobiographical book ‘Simply Fly’ written by Air Deccan Founder Gopinath. And finally, by the point of release affirming that it’s just a fiction and there’s nothing to do with the real life character, except for the one-line borrowed. Doesn’t this look absurd? Yup! The emotional outbursts of the oppressed Maara (Suriya) as his ambitious desires get hampered would obviously let the audiences correlate. Especially in a place with demographic evils, where owning a car and flying by plane is a prestigious criteria, it’s easy to kindle in their senses to come out and praise Sudha Kongara-Suriya for a brave attempt.
Precisely, hailing from the school of Maniratnam, one would find the parallel reference of ‘Guru’. Both the protagonists go through the paths of upheavals while achieving their dreams, except for one difference. Maniratnam’s Hero never-ever screams or emotionally bursts out and Sudha’s hero never keeps calm. Jokes apart! There’s a heavy responsibility when adapting a novel into movie. We have come across many Hollywood movies and even our Bollywood flicks doing perfect justice to the books. It’s so much adorable that the author and publication house even replace the cover image with the movie’s poster. That’s a mutual tribute between the novelist and the makers of a film. If that’s the case, will it be the same with ‘Simply Fly’ and ‘Soorarai Pottru’. What’s the point of mentioning the credits in the beginning and later completely changing the plot? Or else, how can a dim-witted ideation of a scene like Vijay Mallaya inviting Nedumaaran to a party and discuss a business deal just like that and our hero says ‘Somba’. Never expected such a miserable scene from Sudha Kongara, who carved her trademark work in every frame of ‘Irudhi Suttru’… Films can inspire, but shouldn’t spread wrong ideas. Flying for a business is far different from flying for excitement, which wouldn’t last long actually.
On the performance level, Aparna Balamurali and Urvashi have done a great job and so are the other actors like Karunaas, Kaali Venkat. GV Prakash’s songs are good although most of them are no close to the film. In fact, the Suriya-Aparna episodes are completely alien to the main premise and the film could have done well even without them.
As on whole, Soorarai Pottru establishes the prowess performance of Suriya, where his performance as angry young man is awesome. But he can reduce his infuriation hereafter and he has to come out of the ‘Singam’ mode.
