Raayan Movie Review

Raayan marks the 50th film of actor Dhanush, and his second directorial outing. The film has an ensemble star-cast of SJ Suryah, Sundeep Kishen, Kalidas Jayaram, Dushara Vijayan, Prakash Raj, Aparna Balamurali and Selvaraghavan. AR Rahman has composed music and Om Prakash has handled cinematography.

The story of Raayan is nothing but something borrowed from 90s kind of movies, where the clash among the gangsters is the premise. Raayan (Dhanush) along with his siblings (Dushara, Sundeep and Kalidas) own a fast food shop in North Chennai. Newly appointed police officer (Prakash Raj), enters into the picture, and then begins the clash of upheavals and bloodshed among the gangsters (Saravanan and SJ Suryah). How Raayan and his family, who in noway gets webbed into this turbulent war forms the crux of this story.

As mentioned earlier, it’s an ordinary story, and we have come across many such tales in the past, but what makes ‘Raayan’ engrossing. A perfect writing, where Dhanush has made sure that every single character gets its due prominence. The character arch is so perfect, and has been done with neatness. The second highlighting trait is the shot composition. We aren’t sure if its Dhanush’s preproduction work of storyboarding or Om Prakash’s genius work, but the results are appreciable. AR Rahman’s BGM is the most spectacular thing that audiences can enjoy at the theaters. He hasn’t left any scene untouched by his magic. So much effort and dedication can be spotted in every scene with his BGM.

When it comes to performances, it’s Dushara Vijayan stealing the spotlights. It is evident that Dhanush has spent so much energy creating her character, and she has excelled well. Not to miss her captivating performance in hospital scene. Sundeep Kishen’s role is good, but Kalidas Jayaram’s character has no value. SJ Suryah exhibits his routine style of performance, and gets what he always demands from the audiences.

Water Packet song had raised lots of expectations, but the visuals are just okay, but it’s ‘Adangatha Asuran’ song that wins our attention.

The film is certified ‘A’ and hence you can’t look up for feel-good moments. It has a plethora of violence and gory blood shed.

A little problem with Raayan is that who’s the villain? And if that particular person is the villain, then there should have been a perfect conflict and solution. We don’t want to reveal the spoilers, or else, we would have delivered a clear-cut analysis.

On the whole, Dhanush’s ‘Raayan’ is a film that has an old-pattern story, but is made with engaging screenplay and top-notch technical works and good performances.
