Meiyazhagan Movie Review

Director Prem Kumar, who carved a niche of excellence his directorial debut ’96’ is back with his second outing titled ‘Meiyazhagan’. The film, much alike the director’s erstwhile work, brings up a poetic visual representation of two men conversing about the past, which at times, lets us connect and retrospect personally about our contemporary life of missing the native essence.

The film opens with Arvind Swami’s childhood character along with his family departing from Tanjore due to the property issues. Years later, he is urged by situation to return back to the same land to attend his cousin sister’s wedding. As he comes across the relatives, he meets a stranger (Karthi). The rest of the story is about the incidents that happens in a short span of time between them.

Certain things about the ‘Meiyazhagan’ team needs special mention. The crew didn’t make any fake promises, and they remained loyal to the audience preparing them that it’s a slow and poetic drama, which speaks about the human emotions. Naturally, the songs and the visual promos, furthermore justified it.

As we settle down to watch the film, we find the momentum is at check, and there’s no rushing. We’re given a feel of accompanying Arvind Swami’s character. And the entire marriage hall drama turns out to be more engrossing with fun and emotions blend well. The first half has a runtime of around 75 mins, and yet we are so pleased to experience it without any hesitation. The second hour gets emotional and the climax is neatly written. Yes, tweaking the film around 20-25 minutes, will work wonders, but then, the film is a tailor-made treat for the ones, who love to enjoy the ‘Melodrama’.

Music by Govind Vasantha is so ethereal, and we can feel the soul of ’96’ soaking up Meiyazhagan now and then, but they beautify the moments. Cinematography is flawless and every single frame is a portrait of poem. The synch-recording adds more intensity to the film.

Overall, Meiyazhagan endorses a soft and poignant elements that touches you emotionally.
