Mahaan Movie Review
Actor Vikram and his son Dhruv have collaborated as actors playing the lead roles in ‘Mahaan’ directed by Karthik Subbaraj. The National award winning actor has always craved to carve niche of excellence by exhibiting his stellar performances. Well, with both father-son duo sharing the screen together, the expectations spiked up on Mahaan, which couldn’t make through theatrical release, but eventually landed up with OTT premiering on Amazon Prime Video.
The story revolves around Mahaan Gandhi (Vikram), who belongs to the lineage of freedom fighters. He has been strictly groomed by his father to follow the Gandhian way. However, things break loose out of hell, when his wife (Simran) finds out that he has boozed on his birthday. She and her son desolate him, which prompts him to become a liquor baron along with his friend (Bobby Simha). They are now getting beyond the pinnacle of success with their mafia-oriented life until Mahaan’s son Dadha (Dhruv) appears before him as a police officer. What unfolds next is an emotional confrontation between them.
Actor Vikram effortlessly steals the show, and that’s his mantra as in all the movies. He nails it down perfectly in every single frame with his colossal performance. We can easily sense the hunger that Dhruv possesses to exhibit his prowess performance. His role as an aggressive young man, where at his age, any boy would have those difference of opinions with fathers is very well crafted. Simran is so natural with her performance, but it would be really good, if directors write a strong character, and cast her in their movies. Bobby Simha has given his best. However, he gets eclipsed by Vikram’s screen presence now and then. Sananth is good with his show.
It looks like Karthik Subbaraj is heavily influenced by Quentin Tarantino movies. But he has to realize that it’s Tamil movie industry, and we have our way of entertaining audience. Even his technical crew seems to have incorporated the same style. Karthik Subbaraj has top-notch skill when it comes to presenting the movies. His making style are flawless, but what about the storyline. A filmmaker shouldn’t blatantly make movies based on this factor, there has to be some emotional and entertaining elements too. Although, we get to see father-son Vikram and Dhruv exhibiting their phenomenal spell as actors, we aren’t able to connect with them.
The last 25 minutes of the film is the real cherry-pick. By end of the show, we are gifted with excellent performances of Vikram and Dhruv. Special mention to Karthik Subbaraj’s final moment twists that eclipses few flaws in this movie.
