Jothi Movie Review

Over the past few weeks, most of the Tamil releases either focalized up or at least faintly brushed up on the child abuse premises. This week’s release, Jothi is a much-alienated one and it delves into the harshest true incidents – the trafficking of newborn babies.

Set in the backdrops of Cuddalore, the story starts with a head constable (Elango) narrating his colleagues in the police station about a shocking case handled by the Inspector (Vetri) that involved a gruesome crime of a pregnant lady (Sheela Rajkumar) being slit open and newborn baby being abducted. As he sets out to unravel the mystery and trap the culprit, he is exposed to the terrorizing events, which indeed exist in reality as well.

Filmmaker AV Krishna Paramatma has chosen a theme that we have often witnessed in reality through newspapers and news channels. He deserves appreciation for this earnest attempt. Actor Vetri is the next one, who needs special mention for his choice of scripts. He owns a charisma that appeals to the interests of audiences. If he continues to choose unique stories, he is sure to scale great heights. Sheela Rajkumar has done fabulous work with her natural performance. In a few places, we could find the 90s version of Nandita Das, and yes, she has the potential to get acclaimed as a Pan-Indian actress for her commitment to her acting. Producer SP Raja Sethupathi has played an important role in this movie and has done a neat job.

The first has gripping moments and the post-intermission sequences too are engrossing. If there could be anything on the flip side, the editing that was top-notch in the first half slightly gets average in the second hour. This might give a ‘Drama’ feel instead of ‘Thriller and Raciness’ mode in a few places. However, this doesn’t look like a major drawback.

Jothi owns a unique story and the screenplay interwoven with twists and turns make it look commendable.
