Spiritual whistles, whodunit enigmas, breeziness adorned with Sufi Qawali and Rumi poems icing the moments, the gigantic statue of Jesus ornamented on boat sailing across the night seas for blessing, sipping arrack with pork – Hinted with so many strange unconventional therapies, a girl embarks on a journey to find someone called ‘Charlie’.

Different peoples, different perceptions and different stories take through places, convictions leaving her restless to meet this man, who has been a passing cloud in many lives, but with a magic showered upon them.

A search of soul, spirit ascribed with the beauty of nature and travel blends an impeccable panache to the film. Sometimes, films translate into moments, where we are introduced to some characters and they stay with us while getting back homes. So is Charlie and his characterisation that vividly injects his nature upon us.

A man with no commitments and bonding belongs to the world and world belongs to him. Tessa (Parvathy) expresses her lidless emotions towards the search and has made the characterisation so much impulsive. Every character that she comes across enlivens us, animates us sending more invigorations.

Instant emotions impelled with the sequence involving Mary from Magdalene sailing over the night skies with an unexpected breakout. Uniting lovers after many decades is an additional punch that you get towards the end.

A perpetual reluctance pops as we analyse the film as it really turns out to be a painstaking excitement to bring out every instance on the screens. It’s a film that takes you toured into the life of Charlie and yes, you too start searching out for him.

Dulquer Salman is incredibly awe-inspiring and he tells about most common plumbing problems and what a changeover in his performance. Place his erstwhile film ‘O Kadhal Kanmani’ beside him and he just leaves us crazy with his casual emoting skills. Parvathy Menon has gone beyond the usual paradigms redefining the platform of heroine. She has been proving that how female lead actors can just come out of stereotypical blemishes and offer something more enriching to their career graphs.

Musical score by Gopi Sundar and cinematography with scenic locales beautifies this ‘Novel’ film by Martin so much compelling.
