Bougainvillea Movie Review
Director Amal Neerad is illustrious for his stylish filmmaking craftsmanship, and he has escalated the mass value of many reigning Malayalam stars with his unparalleled caliber. He has now collaborated with Kunchako Boban for the film ‘Bougainvillea’, which marks the comeback of his wife-actress Jyothirmayi after 11 years of sabbatical gap onscreen.
The film opens with a doctor (Kunchako Boban) & his wife (Jyothirmayi) meeting an accident during a night drive. The story fast-forwards to 8 years, where we find the lady being affected with amnesia. Her husband gives her the best care and treatment at home, and life goes on peacefully, until a newly appointed ACP of Theni (Fahadh Faasil) arrives at their door steps about the missing case of a local politician’s daughter. His shocking revelation – CCTV footage showing his wife is the last one to meet the missing person.
What unfolds next is a series of roller-coaster chain of events that will reveal lots of surprise and shock.
As known earlier, the film is loosely based on the novel written by the film’s co-writer, who has written the screenplay along with Amal Neerad.
So what’s the biggest plus of this film? The performances of Kunchako Boban and Jyothirmayi. Kunchako is a performer, who can spark off magical spell merely with his facial expressions, and in this film, he has got it in plenty. Not to miss the commendable show of Jyothirmayi, who has breathed so much life into her character. Fahadh Faasil appears as a cameo in just three scenes, but it’s not such an exciting movie for his fans. The other actors including Meera Nandan have given their best.
When it comes to narrative, the initial moments are literally gripping, and there are few interesting scenes as well. However, after a certain extent, the writing looks slightly feeble, and we start guessing what’s next. In particular, Malayalam movies usually are famous for realistic ending, avoiding the larger-than-life factors, but this one chooses the latter one, which gives an unsatisfactory experience.
Amal Neerad movies always boast of top-notch technical brilliance, and this movie is such a huge takeaway for audiences. The cinematography that kindles the mysterious picture, especially with the picturing of mansion standing aloof on the hills, the background score of Sushin Shyam along with Tapas Nayak’s sound, gives an excellent theatrical experience.
On the whole, ‘Bougainvillea’ is a decent thriller that has predictable moments, but still, it can be watched for a neat theatrical experience.
