Aghathiyaa Movie Review

Lyricist Pa. Vijay has directed this horror-fantasy movie ‘Aghathiyaa’ starring Jiiva, and Action King Arjun in the lead role. Raashi Khan is playing the female lead role in this movie. Yuvan Shankar Raja is composing music for this film.

The film set against the backdrops of Pondicherry revolves around the protagonist (Jiiva), an art director facing a severe loss due to cancellation of a shooting. With his mother (Rohini) ailing with cancer, he succumbs to financial crisis. With no options left, he converts the place of shooting into a ‘Horror House’, and sooner, lots of crowds start visiting. While Jiiva, his girlfriend (Raashi Khanna) and his friends are tasting success, they start witnessing paranormal activities in the house. When Jiiva and Raashi Khanna find an old film reel, they come across a new character – doctor (Action King Arjun) and that’s where the interesting series of twists and turns begin with a dark mystery unfolding.

It’s great to see that Lyricist Pa. Vijay has handled a neat story with grand production value perfectly. The way, he has crafted the story, characterisations in different time settings and connecting them needs special mention. The first half is narrated with routine horror-comedy, but story gets little gripping by the second half. Especially, it gets riveting with the entry of Arjun’s character and flashback portions. Jiiva-Raashi Khanna love scenes don’t engross us, and so are few comedy scenes. In fact, removing some of them would definitely give a crisp presentation.

The English actors Edward Sonneblick and Matyida stand out to be good actors. In particular, Edward as antagonist brings up the ultimate fear through his ferocious nature. Director Pa. Vijay has tried showcasing the beauty of ancient Tamil medicine, which gives an everlasting cure to all ailments. Furthermore, few more surprising revelations about how a particular plant can scare away the wild elephants from attacking is appreciable.

The last 30 minutes involving the graphics of Jiiva-Arjun-Edward has been done professionally, and it gets well complemented by Yuvan Shankar Raja’s ‘Fur Elise’ remix. However, he disappoints us with the songs as none of them are impressive, except the remix of Isaignani Ilaiyaraaja’s ‘En Iniya Pan Nilave’.

Overall, Aghathiyaa is a passable show that has some interesting moments, but few romantic portions of the present setting and comedy episodes hamper it impact. Jiiva has nothing special to perform in this movie and it’s Action King Arjun, who shines throughout the film.

Maybe, you can give a casual viewing without any expectations.

Summary

Verdict: With a good concept as plot, the film follows a cliched horror-comedy style, which makes it an average show.
