Vetrimaaran, born on September 4, 1975, is a prominent figure in Indian cinema, renowned for his multifaceted roles as a film director, producer, and screenwriter, predominantly active in Tamil cinema. He is celebrated for his distinctive filmography, characterized by both commercial success and widespread critical acclaim. His contributions to cinema have garnered him numerous accolades, including five National Film Awards, two Filmfare South Awards, and a Tamil Nadu State Film Award.

Vetrimaaran embarked on his directorial journey with “Polladhavan” in 2007, marking the onset of a remarkable career. His subsequent work, “Aadukalam” in 2011, clinched six National Film Awards, further solidifying his position as a filmmaker of exceptional talent. Operating under his production banner, Grass Root Film Company, Vetrimaaran continues to nurture innovative cinematic ventures. His directorial venture “Visaranai” in 2016 earned the distinction of being India’s official entry to the Academy Awards, showcasing his prowess on the international stage. The acclaimed “Asuran” in 2019 added to his laurels, securing the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil.

Beyond his cinematic endeavors, Vetrimaaran is the visionary behind the International Institute of Film and Culture (IIFC), reflecting his commitment to fostering artistic expression and creative education.

In his personal life, Vetrimaaran hails from Cuddalore, born to Dr. V. Chitravel, a respected veterinary scientist, and Megala Chitravel, a renowned novelist. His formative years were spent in Ranipet, where he cultivated his passion for storytelling. At Loyola College, he encountered his life partner, Aarthi, with whom he shares a familial bond blessed with two children, Poonthendral and Kathiravan.
