Nag Ashwin Reddy, born on April 23, 1986, is a distinguished Indian filmmaker and scriptwriter, celebrated for his contributions to Telugu cinema. His directorial journey commenced in 2015 with the critically acclaimed philosophical drama ‘Yevade Subramanyam’.
His 2018 directorial venture, ‘Mahanati’, a biopic featuring Keerthy Suresh as the legendary actress Savitri, earned numerous awards, including the prestigious Best Feature Film in Telugu at the 66th National Film Awards. For his exceptional direction, Nag Ashwin was honored with the Filmfare Award for Best Director – Telugu.
‘Mahanati’ also received international recognition, being featured in the Indian Panorama Mainstream section of the 49th International Film Festival of India and winning the “Equality in Cinema Award” at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne in 2018.
Nag Ashwin’s early career involved assisting in the film ‘Nenu Meeku Telusa’ and working under Sekhar Kammula on ‘Leader’ and ‘Life Is Beautiful’, where he also took on minor acting roles.
Hailing from a medical family in Hyderabad, Telangana, with both parents, Jayaram and Jayanthi Reddy, practicing medicine, and a sister, Nikhila Reddy, who is also a doctor, Nag Ashwin has his roots in Nagar Kurnool district. He is an alumnus of Hyderabad Public School and holds a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from the Manipal Institute of Communication. Further honing his craft, he pursued a Film Direction course at the New York Film Academy. He is also related to D. Nageshwara Reddy, the founder of the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology.
