Studio Flicks Exclusive: “7 Releases for Pongal – Not a possibility?
With some changes happening over the release on December 23, especially with Singam 3 postponements, lots of shifts are going on. One among them is the spur of moment announcements of around 7 films for this festive occasion of Pongal. While Vijay’s Bairavaa was the only official confirmation for the first place, it was later followed by GV Prakash’s Bruce Lee. Sooner, there were heavy downpour of movies joining the league – Arun Vijay’s Kuttram 23, Vijay Sethupathi’s Puriyadha Puthir, Jai’s Enakku Vaaytha Adimaigal, Kalaiyarasan starrer ‘Adhey Kangal’ and Krishna-Swathi starrer ‘Yaakkai’. These medium and small budget movies had only one hope that irrespective of critical analysis or mixed reviews, the four long holidays would definitely pull in more crowds. But then some of the traders clearly affirm that it’s a gimmick played by producers to check out and see if any other movies would back off from the release. It usually happens that many film posters carrying the advertisements of release dates are postponed on spur of moment.
It usually happens that many film posters carrying the advertisements of release dates are postponed on spur of moment.
Yet another critical condition for these releases is that, there are chances that theatres might immediately remove the movies after couple of shows if there aren’t enough crowds. Although, certain producers, who are already into the distribution might enforce on Gentleman’s agreement to feature their films there, it would definitely give no rooms for the theatres to waste their income during these days.
Apparently, 2016 Pongal had four releases – Thaara Thappattai, Rajini Murugan, Gethu and Kathakali
A proficient trade analysis gives a clear affirmation for a festival season like Pongal; a package of 3 films would do decent results for all the releases. It all happened for the past couple of Pongal festivals, where 2015 saw the release of Vikram’s I, Vishal’s Aambala and GV Prakash’s Darling. All these movies made a decent collection according to their ratios of production cost, screening count and so on. Apparently, this year Pongal had four releases – Thaara Thappattai, Rajini Murugan, Gethu and Kathakali. But then with couple of movies not really getting good reception and another movie having the dark theme, Rajini Murugan absolutely was declared as the winner. But at the same time, all the other three releases managed to get decent collections, which if was released on any other ordinary Friday, would have dulled up the situation.
But when it comes to 7 releases, it would definitely push up the situations to a tougher situation
But when it comes to 7 releases, it would definitely push up the situations to a tougher situation. Based on the trade predictions, Vijay’s Bairavaa would be undoubted winner with grand opening. Following this, audiences would definitely opt for Vijay Sethupathi’s Puriyadha Puthir. Although, the film isn’t meant for family audiences as it is a mystery thriller, ‘Vijay Sethupathi Face Value’ is more than enough to draw more crowds for the opening.
GV Prakash has been consecutively facing flops one after the other, but then he has formed a gang of audiences – Teenage groups who would give a try for this film ‘Bruce Lee’, but only a day or two aftermath release might pull family audience based on the reviews.
“Kuttram 23” has a strong content based on a medical thriller novel written by Rajesh Kumar
Although Arun Vijay’s Kuttram 23 has everything engrossing to offer audiences, he would come up as fourth preference for the occasion. But mark our words! The film has a strong content based on a medical thriller novel written by Rajesh Kumar.
Other releases like Adhey Kangal starring Kalaiyarasan in lead role and Jai-Karunakaran starrer ‘Enakku Vaaytha Adimaigal’ might have the results clear only in accordance to the box office status of other four movies.
‘Assumptions and Predictions’ doesn’t count in any trade for their possibilities and probabilities for any results
But end of the day, ‘Assumptions and Predictions’ doesn’t count in any trade for their possibilities and probabilities for any results and there are few sources claiming that around 3 films might back out from the Pongal race on the spur of moment.
Release Update:
At the spur of the moment, all the films backed out including Puriyaadha Pudhir, which almost confirmed till January 11th. Finally, Vijay in “Bairavaa” is releasing on January 12th & R.Parthiban directorial “Koditta Idangalai Nirappuga” will be releasing on January 13th. So out of the 7 movies competed for releasing this Pongal, only two films won the race.
