Vallan Movie Review

Sundar C as a director is very much elated with the grand success of his recent release ‘Madha Gaja Raja’, and today, his movie as an actor titled ‘Vallan’ is released. The film is directed by Mani Seyyon and it’s a crime investigation thriller.

Sundar C plays a police officer, who is suspended for physically attacking his senior officer. On the personal side, he is deeply affected by his missing wife, and there is no clue about it. During this juncture, a famous Christian pastor’s son-in-law is brutally murdered, and the police department has no option, but to pull back Sundar C into duty for investigation. Although reluctant initially, Sundar C gets a pinch of hope that this case could be somewhere linked to his missing wife, and kick-starts the investigation.

With the post-pandemic phase, audiences are very much exposed to lots of investigative thrillers, due to the emergence of OTT platforms. In particular, Malayalam cinema has often released movies based on this genre. In fact, this genre has become so hackneyed, that audiences get an easy prediction even before the protagonist cracks the mystery.

Sundar C’s Vallan is yet another investigative potboiler. He shines very well in the action sequences, but when it comes to emoting, he lacks the grip. Tanya Hope Sundar C’s wife appears only in the flashback sequences. Heba Patel, who accompanies Sundar C for the investigative process has nothing special to deliver.

Santhosh Dhayanidhi’s BGM helps a lot in enhancing the screenplay and visual elements. The cinematography by Mani Perumal offers more substantiality to the story.

The screenplay is passable, and not too boring, and the climax twist is appreciable, which is totally unpredictable.

On the whole, Sundar C’s Vallan is a regular crime investigative thriller pattern but is watchable.
