Dominic & The Ladies’ Purse Movie Review

There’s something always appreciable about Mammootty – His earnest desire to experiment with unique stories. In the recent years, the league of movies, he has been a part off, has generated an undebatable scenario, despite the hits and flops. The actor kick-starts this year with yet another experimental spell through ‘Dominic & The Ladies’ Purse’, directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon.

The filmmaker has tried staying away from his routine style of storytelling in both technical and narrative aspects. Well, if you’re watching the film without any knowledge of who the director is, you would be significantly surprised to see it’s GVM. From maintaining a lighter tone to the first half to embellish the quirky and light moments followed by sudden shift as the mystery and investigation intensifies, exhibits his directorial craftsmanship yet again. On the flip side, his attempt to go for ‘Synch Recording’ works and doesn’t work out in few places.

The story is about a not-so perfect or a larger-than-life hero. Dominic, a former police, and now having his own detective agency. Of course, it’s a mediocre business as he and his ‘Dr. Watson’, – Gokul have the clients offering them to uncover the affairs of their partners and in other cases, the background about bride and groom. When his house owner wants him to go behind the ‘Purse’ that she found in a hospital, so that his pending rentals can be waived off, both of them embark on an investigation.

The first half has some lighter and fun-filled moments as Mammootty and Gokul try to bring out the fun from their personal references. With the latter being the son of Suresh Gopi, he doesn’t fail to bring up the humorous references. Second half could have been investable for the audiences, if the narrative was kept more thrilling rather than being a plain and predictable one.

On the whole, Dominic and The Ladies’ Purse is a below average fare that could have worked out very well if made with a riveting writing.
