Vettaiyan Movie Review

Superstar Rajinikanth’s latest outing ‘Vettaiyan’ is directed by TJ Gnanavel and is produced by Lyca Productions. The film has an ensemble star-cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Manju Warrier, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Dushara Vijayan and many others. Anirudh Ravichandran is composing music and S.R. Kathir is handling cinematography.

Superstar Rajinikanth essays the role of an encounter specialist, who is bound to an erroneous situation of bumping off an innocent mistaking him to be a criminal. Later, he sets out to trap the real criminals with the help of a petty cyber hacker (Fahadh Faasil) and a lady cop (Ritika Singh).

Few minutes into the film, we are given a clear picture of what this film is all about. The film’s first half is so interesting, and nearly a runtime of 80 minutes doesn’t look like a hampering phase. The interval point gives more excitements to expect a racy second half, but that’s where the actual problem begins. While the first half has lots of high-pace momentum scenes, the second half, in contrast, turns out to be a conversational one, especially preachy. T.J. Gnanavel could have worked this scene with enhanced and fine-tuned screenplay.

Superstar Rajinikanth’s screen presence is good and adorable. He looks slightly dull in few scenes, but still, he is able to deliver the many emotional and massive scenes perfectly. Fahadh Faasil is the ultimate show stealer in this movie. He keeps creating sparks of laughter with his smart and tricky characterisation. It’s both Rajinikanth and Fahadh Faasil, who rule the show. On the contrary, Amitabh Bachchan seems to have appeared namesake, and there’s no substantiality for his character. Rana Daggubati’s character is so weak, and that’s where the entire film starts fading away from our attention. Ritika Singh is okay, and Manju Warrier has little prominence.

BGM by Anirudh is okay, and the songs fail to create the impact as they are nowhere close to the film’s screenplay. Editing is one of the biggest plus in this film, especially during the first half.

If T.J. Gnanavel had tried enhancing the screenplay with more riveting moments, this film would have been a wholesome gripping package for the film buffs. But now it ends up as an average fare.
