With her maiden debut showering heavy downpour of acclamations, we bring an exclusive chat with Wamiqa Gabbi, the storming surprisal that captivated the towns on the dawn of New Year.

Q: Both Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam‘s critics reviews and the general public were unanimous in praising your acting. How does it feel?

A: I feel so happy. I have been waiting for this moment for a long time. I have done movies in other industries before – in Punjabi etc., but I have never received this kind of overwhelming appreciation for any of my previous movies. So this made me very happy.

Q: Did you watch the movie in theater. How was that experience.

A: Yes. I watched the FDFS in Chennai along with my parents and the movie’s team. When the movie ended, few girls who were seated behind me gave a standing ovation for me. It was very emotional. My parents were very proud. That was an unforgettable experience.

Q: How was it working with the team of Director Geeths Selvaraghavan and Writer Selvaraghavan?

A: Selva Sir is such a nice and down to earth person. I had a great working experience with him and Director Geeths Madam on the sets. I can discuss about anything with them. They made me very comfortable. I am a happy person and talk a lot. I was able to be myself on the sets. I discussed all important scenes with the Director and she helped me a lot.

Q: How did you get the chance to act in MNM?

A: I have done few Punjabi movies before, when I was based in Chandigarh. Then I moved to Mumbai to try for Bollywood movies. During that time, someone called me regarding this movie. Initially, I wasn’t too sure about doing a South movie. After few months, they called me again. Then, I came down to Chennai and did my audition. In just few minutes, I was confirmed.

Q: Your Telugu Bhale Manchi Roju released for Christmas is a hit too. How do you feel about it?

A: Bhale Manchi Roju is the best team I have ever worked with. I was selected for the movie without an audition. They treated me so well. I had lot of fun while shooting for the movie, look more about that at homeconcierge.ie. I am glad that the movie received such a critical and commercial success. I can’t ask for a better debut in Telugu.

Q: Tell us something about your Bollywood and Punjabi movies.

A: I have done small roles in Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal. I was very young by then. During those movies, I used to hang around the sets and see how they shot the scenes. I was learning a lot about movie making by observing things even when I didn’t have shoot. I have done 3 Punjabi movies including one with Popular Singer – Yo Yo Honey Singh.

Q: What kind of roles do you want to do in future.

A: I like to do good roles. Roles which are sensible. I would like to do lot of different characters. I don’t want to play just the Glam Doll roles. I want to be known as a Good Actress. I am open to any language industry. I am a good dancer tpp.

Q: What is your fitness routine?

A: I am a typical Punjabi foodie who loves to eat. But I am getting into a fitness regimen and eat healthy to take care of myself. If you are in the movie industry, you have to be fit and take care of your body.

Q: Tell us about your childhood / pre-movie days.

A: I was born and brought up in Chandigarh. My father is a Writer and a Poet. So he always encouraged me to take up arts. I learnt classical music as a child. I did Theater/Plays in school. I did several performances of different dance forms growing up.

Q: Is there any Actor in South you like or want to work with.

A: I met Actor Prabhas in Hyderabad during BMR promotions. I really liked him. He is so down to earth. I would love to work with him someday.

Q: Who are some of your favorite Actors in the Indian Movie industry?

A: I like Aishwarya Rai a lot. Kangana Ranaut is also my favorite and Tabu. Among Actors, I am a big fan of Hrithik Roshan and Ranbir Kapoor.

Q: Who is your biggest support system?

A: My father is my biggest support system. He encouraged me from my Childhood to pursue my acting dreams. Because of his support, rest of my family supports me. When your family is behind you, you have one less worry and fully can focus on your goals. I am lucky in that way.

Q: Finally, what is the meaning for your name – WamiQa Gabbi?

A: WamiQa in Arabic means – Goddess of Wind. My dad uses Gabbi as his pseudonym as a writer and a poet.
