The story of ‘Dharavi’ tamil people and their fight/protest against the politician who tries to destroy their slum area. Kaala leads the protest. Film has a mix of family drama and action flavor.
Superstar’s performance is a major key; his body language, charm, walking style & dialogue delivery makes us wonder. Good to see actor Rajinikanth again after ‘Kabali’. His hardwork and efforts are visible. Thalaivar’s Introduction scene is always special , but saying that, its a little disappointment here. His intro was shown in a very simple manner.
Supporting actors performance is biggest strength of the film. Starting from Eshwari Rao, Manikandan, ‘Vathikuchi’ Dileepan, Anjali Patil to Samuthirakani, they have given their best. An actor like Nana Patekar would have been utilized more. ‘Kannamma’ Huma Quershi’s role adds romance.
Film is technically brilliant. Music has been composed by Pa.Ranjith’s favorite Santhosh Narayanan. Songs are pretty good and have variety. ‘Sema weight’ is mass, Kannamma’ is melodious, hip hop style ’Poraaduvom’ rap is energetic. Background music had the required intense. Cinematography and art direction needs special mention. Great art work by Ramalingam and team. Dharavi sets look so real. Editing could have been better.
Pa.Ranjith is a director who has his own unique political persuasion which was evident in his earlier flicks. Kaala is not an exception; he has travelled the same path here; Film’s storyline is pretty old. Screenplay has few beautiful elements in first half. Later half of the film shows ‘Protest’ stating ‘Land is our right’. Felt its little overdose. Dialogues should have been more sharp.
Few Moments which impresses are – ‘Zareen – Kaala’ first meet with the ‘Kannamma’ bgm, Interval clash between ‘Hari & Kaala’, Bridge action sequence. Film falls under Watchable category mainly for the lively performance, hardwork & efforts from superstar. Don’t expect too many mass scenes; Keep in mind its a Pa Ranjith product.
