Story/Plot :
Saivam is about a grandfather who is eagerly waiting for the arrival of his family members for a village temple function and he gets delighted after their arrival. Mean time, Tamil (Sara Arjun) gran daughter of Nassar is fond of a rooster named Paapa. When the family remembers that they should offer Paapa to Ellai Saami, Tamil hides the rooster at a secret place in the upstairs.
What happens to the rooster ? Does Tamil succeed in her mission of hiding it from her family ? To know the answer, watch the film in big screen.
Saivam Experience :
It is well evident that director Vijay is at his best in Saivam, each and every characterization in the movie is completely unique and one can easily relate to them. There are many well written moments in Vijay’s screenplay, the film starts with a plain sky with people selling meat and ends again with a plain sky with vegetable vendors shouting at a market, these two shot summarize the whole film.
Similarly at first the family members think that offering the rooster to god will solve their problems, later when they turn vegetarian all good things start happening in the family which ends the film with a feel good factor.
A girl named Tamil could speak English with elegance conveys a beautiful underlying message that even students in village are in match with urban kids, Sara’s Thopukarnam for her mistakes and also for other’s mistakes is well used and the scene where entire family doing Thopukarnam in the climax justifies the whole Thopukarnam habit in the family, the pre-interval portion where the entire rooster searching episode gets connected is one of the example for the well written screenplay.
Also the establishments of characters are unique in Saivam and there is no cinematic factor in it. For example, being born and brought up in a traditional backdrop Sara understands people in her family while the kid from Dubai is adamant and he is full of attitude, seems like the director don’t want to paint grey shade to any of his characters and hence everyone in the family is kind.
As the director has perfectly sketched Sara’s character as a kind kid who is loved by everyone in the family, when the family members stood by her in the climax, it doesn’t appeared to be cinematic, that’s what a good characterization and screenplay can do for a movie.
The adolescent love portions between Baasha and Twara are handled in a more matured and realistic way, in fact there is zero vulgarity in it and only adds the feel good factor to the film.
After Vijay, GV Prakash’s music and Nirav Shah’s cinematography are the major pillars of the movie. GV Prakash has used different set of BGM’s for different characters in the movie, for example we could hear a separate track whenever the adamant kid appear on screen.
Similarly Nirav Shah’s cinematography is gelled along with the film’s flow and it doesn’t stand out, that’s how a good cinematography should be. Editing by Antony is good and the film’s running time is just 2 hours, which is sure to help the movie at the box office.
Direction :
Director AL Vijay is always known for establishing connection between various small characters in his screenplay, it was evident in Madarasapattiam and also in Deiva Thirumagal, later the director’s commercial venture Thaandavam didn’t have such novel elements but he is back to his best in Saivam.
